Tina's Photoshoot in Santa Cruz

Very early on when Visia Productions first started, we jokingly asked our friend Tina to help model for us.  Surprisingly and without hesitation, she said "sure!".  So we finally found a slot open during the 4th of July weekend and picked Santa Cruz as the ideal location.  We wanted to experiment a bit with a beach scene, and was envisioning the shots we wanted in our heads the entire week.  The finally weekend came, and it started out perfectly.  Warm day on Saturday, sunny day on Sunday, exactly as we had hoped.  But things turned sour quickly when Monday rolled around and we crested over the hills of hwy 17.  Off in the distance, we couldn't even make out the sun, and when we arrived into town, we saw everyone wearing long sleeves and pants.  This wasn't good....

It was too late to turn back now, as we were scrambling to figure out what we wanted the shoot to look like given the new conditions.  When we finally arrived at our first location, Tina, being the trooper that she is, didn't even flinch when it came time to take off her sweater to start the shoot.  Even though the scenery and backdrops weren't what we originally intended, the shoot came out beautifully.  It was so easy filming Tina, since she was always so aware of her surroundings and always knew what shot we were going for before we even instructed her.

Thanks to special assistant Esther for helping out on the shoot and being on top of it with all the gear.  From the whole Visia Productions crew, thanks again to Tina for coming out on this chilly day to model for us!!!

Niko's 1st Birthday

A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend Niko's 1st birthday party.  He's Maria and Brent's firstborn son, and they graciously invited me to celebrate this special occassion.  It was hosted at Tobang, a favorite among our group of friends, but it was also the first time I witnessed a Korean baby's first birthday.  Similar to most cultures, there's always the first big celebration for the baby, and this was it.  The highlight of the event (minus the food) was when the baby gets to choose between three items.  Depending on what he picks among the three items, it's supposed to determine what he'll be when he grows up.

Unlike the previous shoot (Zachery's baptism) where I had my pick of equipment, I felt a bit naked going into this event.  I recently sold my T2i and was waiting for the 7d to come, so I had to resort to using my good ol' XTi.  Also the filter for my 70-200 didn't arrive yet, so I didn't feel comfortable taking that lens out with just bare glass.  So I shot mainly with the 17-85 lens with my attached 430ex flash to help with the lighting situation.  I was so glad I packed the flash even though I originally didn't think I would need it, but when shooting kids speed is the key since it's almost impossible to ask them to stay still.

Thanks Brent and Maria for inviting me, hopefully you guys enjoy the pictures!

Night on the San Francisco Bay - Tom and Melissa's Reception

Diana's brother Tom had their wedding reception on a cruise line that traveled around the San Francisco Bay.  We "cruised" by many of the Bay's nicest attractions and got the chance to see the sides of places you normally can't unless in a boat.  Here are a few snap shots from the evening.

Zachary's Baptism

A few weeks ago (actually, the day after Alton+Charissa's wedding), was my cousin's son's baptism.  Since I rented the 70-200 f2.8L IS and 24mm f1.4L for the wedding the day before, I wanted to take full advantage of these lenses.  It was my first time attending a baptism, so I actually had no idea what to expect.  It made shooting a bit interesting, since I never knew what was coming up next.  Instead of being able to enjoy the moment, I found myself standing the entire time with the camera always at the ready so as not to miss a crucial moment.  As was the case the day before, I fully noticed the loudness of the Rebel shutters, especially in a quiet room and I only hope the constantly shutter clicking wasn't overly distracting the entire time.

One note, I switched back to using my XTi after mainly using the T2i for the majority of the previous day, and it was a HUGE difference in terms of processing.  I barely ever shoot in full manual mode, just because often in shoots like this, I don't have the time to set the aperture, shutter, iso, AND exposure for every scene.  So I tend to leave it in aperture priority and let the camera do the rest.  I could tell instantly, that with the new digic4 processor on the T2i, all the settings were automatically set to get a better shot.  Whereas on the XTi, I found myself taking a shot, looking to make sure the picture came out ok, adjusting a bit, then shooting again.  On the T2i, I found that I often didn't have to make too many adjustments after the shot..... it just worked.
